This family portrait session at Glenview Mansion was a photographer’s dream. Lush foliage, perfect light and, of course, the basket. A baby’s cuteness is always magnified by putting them inside things – pretty bags, decorated cardboard boxes, litters of baby animals (if you really want to overload your senses) – but there’s nothing quite as eye catchingly adorable as putting a baby in a basket with balloons. The fairy tale feeling is undeniable. I can easily imagine this cutie pie flying off to have some grand adventure reminiscent of Harold and the Purple Crayon.
…Perhaps discovering this beautiful, magical field after landing from a long journey through the clouds…
…And then ending his quest back with his loving parents, of course. So, if it weren’t obvious already, I am thoroughly enamored with this child. And his parents clearly love him a great deal. And he clearly loves his parents a great deal…
…But unfortunately, despite all the ambient feelings of love and affection in the air, Baby S didn’t return my sentiments. He’s rather shy and regarded me quite wearily, if you can’t tell from the face he’s making below. In fact, I think we spent as much time trying to distract him from my presence as we did taking pictures.
Just look at him. Ever vigilant, keeping an eye out for my lurking presence… And I do mean “lurking.” I eventually had to nest within the branches of a small shrub with only my camera lens peeking out from between the leaves. Only then did Baby S lower his guard, however briefly.
Which was completely worth it to capture this beautiful family. Thank you to Baby S’ parents for providing the basket, the balloons, and the idea – it turned out perfectly and is one of my favorite images to date! And, of course, thank you to Baby S for putting up with me.
